Values and vision

Murray Lockwood is welcomed as a North Harbour Club trustee

As someone who is used to throwing his hat in the ring for the benefit of others, Murray Lockwood didn’t take long to say ‘yes’ to the invitation to become a trustee of the North Harbour Club. The Takapuna-based CEO of MSC Consulting is enthusiastic about increasing his contribution by providing input on the strategic aims of the organisation.

“The values of the Club are values I live by," says Murray. "Encouraging and supporting people to achieve excellence I feel is important. I also believe in supporting people who struggle at the other end of the spectrum. That’s why we, at MSC, have continued to support the Club. It has values I’m happy to stand for and felt I could balance these with my experience in governance to bring value to the board.

“I’m interested to look at where the Club is, strategically, and where the Club is wanting to be going forward. I think it’s got potential to continue to grow."

Murray’s governance credentials are rich and varied. Sport has played, and continues to play, a starring role in his Board background; he has carried out advisory work for many national and regional sporting organisations.

As former chair of Netball Northern Zone (and Northern Mystics), Murray has provided governance in the sport for over 15 years. He chairs an advisory board of Aktive - Sport NZ’s and Auckland Council’s strategic partner carrying the vision to create ‘the world’s most active city’. Gymnastics, tennis, cricket, golf and more… Murray has had a hand in shaping the direction of many sports in Auckland. He was on the board, which he chaired for a period of time, that was responsible for the huge development which saw Manukau Golf Club relocate from Manurewa to Windross Farm in Ardmore. Just one of the many impact projects he has helped to steer.

Involvement in sports governance has been led by his family’s various sporting passions. He plays golf and tennis, his wife umpired, and daughter played netball, and his son competed in gymnastics.

A new passion for Murray has come from being a grandfather, after his daughter gave birth to a son early last year. And he loves nothing more than getting the family together and spending quality holiday time at their beach house in Pauanui.

Murray has spent over 14 years as CEO of MSC Consulting, ‘a Shore business through and through’ – founded 37 years ago. As a newly minted North Harbour Club trustee, Murray is pleased to be bringing his energy and experience to the table to shape Shore lives for good.

“People support each other here,” he says. “The Shore has a camaraderie among its businesspeople. They want to work together to help each other and help other people here on the Shore. The North Harbour Club is a very strong organisation to support through which to be able to do that.”
