Catching up with Tayla Alexander

Opera Singer and 2014 AIMES Judges Special Award Winner

Tayla Alexander, our 2014 AIMES Judges Special Award Winner, and the Auckland Opera Studio's youngest-ever member, has gone global after being picked up by a German radio station.

Her rendition of Kate Bush's classic 'Wuthering Heights' was a collaboration between composer Carl Doy and concert pianist Hadley Ronayne. This project has been a very special moment in Tayla's career because the song had been made with someone she listened to as a child.

"I grew up listening to Carl Doy's magnificent music, so it was a huge privilege to work with him as our producer,". Carl, now 71 years old, is a multi-platinum-selling concert pianist and has worked with the likes of Shirley Bassey, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and B.B. King. As terrifying as it was to first work with him because of how highly regarded he is as a musician and producer, today five years on, the trepidation had been replaced with respect and Tayla believes creating music with someone who understood her goals as an artist had been invaluable.

Carl has said that Tayla was remarkable to start with but somehow she manages to improve every time "I'm hoping we'll be able to do more work together before the opera world claims her full attention."

Tayla’s music is currently sold in more than 15 countries around the world – from Mexico and Sweden to Germany, China and USA.

Tayla's is currently working on a song and hopes to have a music video out in shortly.

"Creating a song is like taking a piece of your heart and putting it out for people to see,"
