Catching up with Nadia Evans - Athletics all rounder

AIMES Junior Excellence Award 2016

Nadia never ceases to amaze us, with a long list of achievements right across the athletics spectrum, and this season has been no different.

Nadia placed 1st in the Auckland Junior Pentathlon for her age group taking home another Gold medal. Having not being able to participate last year due to injury she was very pleased to come away with the title that she has won 5 out of the last 6 years.

Auckland Athletics Champs:
Nadia’s fighting spirit was particularly evident on the second day of the Auckland Champs when she had to compete in 3 events. The weather was extremely hot and humid and after running the 100m and 400m heats she was particularly low on energy. After recovering for a while she ran the 100m final and then went straight to long jump. Her first 2 jumps were not very good as she was tired from the 100m final. On her third jump she just managed to qualify 5th and the top 6 competitors get another 3 jumps. She then had to go and run the 400m final in which she gave it everything she had in a tough fought battle to just take the win. After doing so she collapsed to the ground, as did her other competitors. After regathering herself she returned to the long jump for her final 3 jumps. We brought her run up forward to conserve energy and on her 1st jump of the final 3 she pulled out a big enough jump to go from 5th to 1st. We could not believe it!! She showed such determination and we think it was her will to win that got her through.

Gold 100m – 12.79s
Gold 200m – 26.32s
Gold 400m – 1:02.51s
Gold Long Jump - 4.90m

School Athletics:

Nadia recently competed in her school athletics day at Long Bay College. She won the 100m, 200m, 300m and Long Jump. In doing so she broke all 4 school records for these events. In the 100m final they had a mixed final with Junior, Intermediate and Senior girls and Nadia won the race. This coming week she will represent her school at the North Harbour Zone athletics day in the 100m, 200m and Long Jump. If she qualifies from there she will then go to the Auckland Secondary School Athletics Champs on 28th March at Mt Smart. The team to represent North Harbour at the North Island Secondary Schools Champs will be selected after this week’s Zone Day. If she makes that team they will compete at Wanganui in the second week of April.

12/13 Interprovincials:

Nadia has been selected as part of the Auckland Team to compete at the 12/13 Interprovincials in Taranaki over the Easter weekend. She will be competing in the 100m, 200m, 400m and Long Jump, as well as doing a relay. Auckland won the title last year for the first time in a decade and hope to do the same this year.

It has been a great season so far and Nadia is in her final month of competitions before she can take a well-earned break for a few months!
