Catching up with AIMES Alumni Verity Burgess

Verity was the recipient of the 2010 AIMES Arts Award, sponsored by ASB Bank

As you know, it has been a very strange time as of late! I have moved home due to Covid-19 to hunker down in NZ and I'm very pleased I did! I hope that you have all managed to stay safe during this time.

In 2017, I took on the role of Understudy 'Eva Peron' in the international tour of Evita which was on the road until Jan 2019. After finishing, I spent the rest of the year writing my own one-woman, cabaret show 'The Iconic Blonde', which celebrates the music of iconic blonde female artists and I was thrilled to be able to sell out The Pumphouse, showcasing it back home in NZ. Check out the details and some of the snippets from the show at www.theiconicblonde.com

When everything is back to normal, I aim to tour it within NZ, so that I can help support our beautiful theatre venues around the country. I am beginning to get back into my music gigging (as you saw on facebook) and regularly play at Bamboo Tiger/Shanghai Lil's and Botticelli's Wine Bar and Restaurant in Auckland.

I also have a few exciting plans in the pipeline with local Musical Theatre companies which should fill in the rest of the year for me. There is New Zealand wide tour in the planning at the moment 'The Shows Must Go On' with a raft of other NZ performers who have returned from overseas, we aim to be in theatres September through to November, with tickets going on sale soon! I am undecided of where I will end up but for now, I am more than happy being close to my family and am enjoying the slower pace!

Hopefully will have some more news for you as we begin to pick up speed.

All the best,
Verity
